Celtic Curse is a common term for hereditary hemochromatosis (HH), also called genetic haemochromatosis (GH), which can cause iron overload that damages joints, liver, and other organs. Symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, and sex problems. HH can cause long term disability or even death if not diagnosed and treated promptly. During menopause it can lead to hemopause.

HH is not as rare as many doctors think. One in 75 people in Ireland and 117 in Scotland have the defective gene (hence the name Celtic Curse). The Iron Disorders Institute says it affects over one million Americans. Iron overload can be treated and damage limited IF it is detected early enough.
